The best Buffer or Hootsuite alternative with a proper API in 2026 is SchedPilot: an open REST API you get on signup, an MCP server for AI agents, nine networks, and no partner-program gate. Ayrshare is the strongest pick for high-volume developer pipelines, and Postiz is the one to self-host. The other three below are dashboard tools that happen to expose an API, which is a different thing. (If MCP matters more to you than the raw API, I track every social media tool with an MCP server separately.)
Why people leave: Buffer closed its API to new developers back in 2019, so anything you build today has to go through Zapier. Hootsuite’s API exists but access runs through a partner program, meaning a sales conversation before you can make your first request. Both are fine schedulers. Neither is something you can build on in 2026, and if you’ve read my piece on how AI assistants are learning to run social accounts, you know why being buildable matters now.
1. SchedPilot
The API is a straightforward REST interface: accounts, posts, media upload, delete, analytics. One POST with content, date and time schedules to every connected account, or you target specific ones. The same operations are available through a hosted MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or OpenClaw can schedule posts in plain language, and through a CLI and custom n8n nodes. Developers building their own product get OAuth2, so end users connect once and you never maintain per-network integrations.
Coverage is X, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, Facebook, Pinterest, Bluesky and YouTube. The dashboard has the agency features Hootsuite users expect (client workspaces, roles, approvals) plus a built-in video editor for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Every API- or agent-created post can be held for approval. API access is on the Platinum plan; there’s a 7-day trial. It’s a smaller company than either incumbent, which cuts both ways: faster support, fewer enterprise checkboxes.
2. Ayrshare
Ayrshare is an API company first and has been for years. If your use case is “our platform posts on behalf of 2,000 users”, the Business plan’s per-user profiles are built for exactly that. The trade-offs: pricing scales per profile, there’s no real dashboard for non-developers, and no approval workflow.
3. Postiz
Open source, self-hostable, public API, MCP server. This is the answer when the compliance team says tokens can’t leave the building. You take on the upkeep, and network APIs change often enough that upkeep is real work.
4. Metricool
Metricool is primarily an analytics-and-scheduling dashboard, and its API comes with the Advanced plan. Documentation is thinner than the three above and rate limits are stricter. Choose it if you want reporting and an API from one vendor and your integration needs are modest.
5. Publer
Publer has an API on its higher tiers alongside a genuinely good scheduler. Media handling is solid. It’s more of a Buffer replacement that also has an API than an API you’d design a product around.
6. Late
Late is a small, developer-only scheduling API with tidy docs and quick onboarding. Fewer networks than SchedPilot or Ayrshare and no dashboard to speak of. Good for a weekend project that needs to post somewhere.
Which one replaces what
Replacing Buffer for a small team or a solo founder who also wants automation: SchedPilot, mostly because it costs less than what Buffer charges for the same account count and adds the API and MCP on top. Replacing Hootsuite for an agency: SchedPilot again, since the workspaces and approvals are there, or Metricool if reporting is the priority. If SocialPilot is also on your shortlist, here is how its alternatives compare. Replacing either as the backend for your own software: Ayrshare or SchedPilot, depending on whether you need the approval step.
